现如今,Internet飞速发展，它越来越成为人们生活中的一部分，人们亲切地把它叫做信息高速公路。那么，什么是Internet呢？今天就让我来告诉你。Internet是一个很庞大的网络。在我们的现实生活中，有三种网络，第一种是电话网。第二种是由同轴电缆组成的有限电视网，那么最后的一个就是互联网了。这三种网络并不是严格的被区分开，随着通信技术的快速发展，他们将越来越密的联系在一起。通俗的说，互联网是将彼此孤立的局域网连接在一起。也许你会问，那他们怎样通信呢？这个问题也是互联网在发展初期所遇到的问题。因为刚开始的局域网在硬件和软件（包括通信协议）方面没有统一的标准，所以当人们想把他们连在一起时，才发现他们彼此很难通信。在这种情况下，在国际上出现了一个国际标准组织，它专门来负责制定标准。而这些标准主要参考一些老牌计算机公司过去已经研制成功的通信协议标准，把他们作为该国际标准中的一部分。逐渐的这种国际标准被越来越多的计算机公司所接受，互联网的发展也就获得了更大的发展，所连接的地域范围越来越大。
这里我就能够给出互联网的定义：Internet是将以往相互独立的，散落在各个地方的单独的计算机或是相对独立的计算机局域网，借助已经发展得有相当规模的电信网络，通过一定的通讯协议而实现更高层次的互联。在这个互联网络中，一些超级的服务器通过高速的主干网络（光缆，微波和卫星）相连，而一些较小规模的网络则通过众多的支干与这些巨型服务器连接。在这些连接中，包括：物理连接和软件连接。所谓物理连接就是，各主机之间的连接利用常规电话线，高速数据线，卫星，微波或光纤等各种通信手段。那么软件连接是什么呢？是全球网络中的电脑使用同一种语言进行交流。换句话说，就是使用相同的通讯协议。

Finally, by clicking the mouse, we are capable of doing such important things as shopping, finding jobs, making friends, down-loading files and programs, doing business, publishing papers and freely airing our opinions on all sorts of interesting issues. What is more, Internet offhrs many opportunities. For example, we can work, educate ourselves and communicate with others at home via Internet.
In the Information Age, it is difficuh to imagine modern life without Internet. With the rapid development of Information Technology industry, successful dot-com companies mushroomed everywhere. Internet is revolutionizing our economy, our society and our life.……
