    与美国英语和英国英语相比较，澳大利亚人的口音主要体现在两个元音的变化方面。一个是I、fight、bike、like等单词中的元音[ai]读得就像boy中的元音[oi]一样；第二是把[ei]念成[ai]，比如play、mate、day、say 等单词，夸张的澳大利亚人读起来就好像是ply、mite、die、sigh。人们很容易将“He is going home today”听成“He is going home to die”。
    澳式英语另一方面的特点表现在其词汇方面。在日常生活中，澳大利亚特有词汇的使用率约占百分之七。这里说的“特有词汇”多指动植物名称，如：Koala（考拉）、Kangaroo（袋鼠）、dingo（澳洲野狗）、boomerang（飞去来镖）、budgerigar（虎皮鹦鹉）等。
    另外，在日常用语中，同样的英文单词在澳式英语中表达的可能是不同的意思，下面，我们举例来说明：
